India Vacation Destination - Delhi

A fascinating amalgam of the ancient and the modern, scholars have traced Delhi’s roots as far back as 1000 B.C. Today, the city is divided simply into two distinctive areas, Old Delhi and New Delhi. There has been a tremendous improvement in the living standards of the average ‘Delhite’ in the last quarter of a century and every conceivable modern luxury is now available here. Not only that but the entitre tourism and hospitality industry has been geared to provide the best in luxury hotels, posh restaurants, well stocked boutique stores and handicraft emporiums offering treasures from all parts of the world. Old Delhi is characterized by its magnificent edifices from the Mughal era, especially the awe-inspiring Red Fort and the imposing Jama Masjid, both constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Located in the vicinity of the colorful, crowded Chandni Chowk market, its narrow alleys with their amazing variety of wares, best explored in a cycle rickshaw, they are majestic reminders of the grandeur of the Mughal empire. The towering Qutab Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, the ruins of the Purana Qila at the other end of Delhi from Old Delhi, are a continuity of the Mughal architectural legacy. To reach these, you pass through a different, more modern Delhi with its graceful Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate which bear the unmistakable imprint of Edwin Lutyen’s design and planning. New Delhi is the capital of India and home to its teeming 16 million inhabitants approximately. Also home to the largest bureaucracy in the world, it is the nation’s primary center for fine arts and other cultural endeavors. Architecturally and socially thus, the city is a diverse mosaic, woven with the tapestries of the cultures that have ruled and/or inhabited Northern India over the last eight centuries. There is no dearth of luxurious accomodation and reputed hotel chains like the Oberois, the Taj, the Trident as well as the Sheraton, offer world class luxury and fine dining. Delhi is extensively connected by air to major cities and countries all over the world as well as various places within the country. It is also, predictably enough, a major hub of various railway lines to all pats of the country and is very well connected by road to even distant destinations in India.
